Rachael L. Introduction/Bio Spatial History

My name is Rachael Lanning, and I am an anthropology major with a minor in history. I have an interest in museum work and public history/archaeology, I find the public interaction with history an incredibly important subject that deserves to be improved. Engagement and digestion of history is something that needs constant attention and I am looking forward to applying the use of maps to aid understanding of history, especially locally. 

I have been engaged in archaeological research pertaining to the Columbia area for about a year now, and I have been interacting with GIS in that research as well as during my archaeological field school this past summer. I am looking at archaeology on campus and at Sesquicentennial State Park, where I have used the ArcGIS StoryMap feature to tell the story of the histories of each location, as well as the archaeological site mapping process.

I look forward to this course and learning more about GIS and public dissemination of historical information!

Project Update

  These maps have since been updated during classes this week, but I unfortunately do not have the updated images on the computer I am currently working off of.  I have been working on digitizing the locations of several of the potteries and properties associated with my project. This will serve as a tool to look at kernel density as well as spatially analyzing distances. I hope to illustrate the narrative of the stoneware products that I am researching. Additionally, I have been creating maps including data of enslaved populations normalized by the total population of South Carolina counties in 1830 and 1850 to try and visualize the context of SC at the time of my project. I look forward to doing more historical work and literature review to create a compelling story about alkaline-glazed stoneware in the context of enslaved and tenant farming communities of South Carolina.

The Vista, 1888

  Map showing dwellings, food/retail locations, vacant buildings, and other locations in the Gervais Street Vista district. Georeferenced Sanborn Fire Insurance Map of the desired location. I chose to look back at the Sanborn maps because I work with the maps in archaeology a lot, but usually after they have already been georeferenced and interpreted. For the most part, I have just used them to determine where good places to start digging shovel tests and test unites might be. I think it will be useful for my future in the field to know how to do the preliminary mapping. Mostly, I wanted to compare the Sanborn map with the area today. What I mostly noticed was the number of dwellings I was mapping. Even as I was in the process of adding them to the feature class, I realized that it was a clear majority. Arctic Sea Ice Decline: Cartographic Creations

  I am so glad I followed through and did not give up while making this! The instructions were obviously very long, and while not complicated, I really wanted to make sure I was making everything properly. I am honestly very proud of the outcome. I appreciated the explanations in the tutorial that said why exactly some changes to the map were being made, for instance, changing the scale of the y-axis on the chart to make it less misleading. There are definitely things in this tutorial that I will continue into my personal mapmaking in rest of the semester.
